Wings, in all colors and all shapes.  Not just birds, but oh the
butterflies. Close your eyes and imagine what color your
wings are.  Tomorrow do this again and remember change
is good.  But yes, to everything there is a season.  A season
being one hour, or a day.  One week or a month, put your
wings of color on and rest awhile. There will time to fly later.
Spread your wings.

Bumblebee on the passion flower
Bumble Bee on Pyracantha Wow, a bumble bee on pyracantha. Bumble Bees are so cool, well unless you get stung by one. I love to sit and relax in the garden and see what I can see in regards to activity. There can be birds and butterflies, as well as our pets. But there can be so much more; there are dragonflies, wasps and the infamous Honeybee. Bumble Bee, common name for any of a group of large, hairy, usually black-and-yellow, and social bees. They are found primarily in temperate regions of is in the northern hemisphere, often ranging farther north and higher in altitude than other bees. Fifty species of bumble bees are known here in North America. This picture was taken in my back yard here in San Diego

Funereal Duskywing Named for its sober coloring, the Funereal Duskywing wanders far to fields, to colonize such pioneer legumes as vetch, lotus, and alfalfa. It is therefore common over a large range and during all seasons. There is a plethora of butterflies all around us, even every day yes.. Butterflies come in all colors from yellow (sulfurs) to bold colors (orange and black). There are white ones and black ones, there are small ones, (1/4 inch) and larger ones (2 inches). There is so much all around us every day. Next time you do your errands, instead of complaining over a bad parking place, be happy that you got to see a butterfly getting some nectar. THEN you order a café’ mocha and count the things you are thankful for in this day.
Gulf Frittilary The butterfly on the front here is a Gulf Frittilary. These butterflies are very common here in San Diego. The flower it is getting nectar from on the front is called pincushion. They come in many colors, from white to lavender, and the butterflies love them. We have had dozens at a time land for a sip of nectar. Gulf Frittilaries are wonderful to watch, the colors are dazzling and they love many flowers, though only the passionflower do they lay eggs on. San Diego is a wonderful place for butterflies. We have dozens of species here
The Gulf fritillary These are gulf fritillary butterflies. They only lay eggs on the passionflower. The do use most other flowers to take in nectar. If you plant passion flower you will have up to a hundred gulf fritillaries a day. They lay one egg at a time. The caterpillars of this butterfly can strip the passionflower vines in less than a month. When a new butterfly comes forth out of its cocoon for the first time and its wings are drying, quite frequently another one will come along like in the picture and wants to mate immediately.
Honey bee This is a picture of a honey bee. Honey bees do more than most of us know. There is a substance called propolis that the honey bees collect. Propolis is sticky when its warm and its is most difficult to use when hard. Now bees collect proplis and use it to seal the hive so that air doesn’t breeze through and take away the warmth. Also propolis has been used in the hospitals back at the turn of the 20th century. Another use was in the animal hospitals too, but in Russia especially. On the other end of the spectrum if you mix the propolis with mineral spirits, listen to this: you can use it for a varnish. Many musicians have used propolis for their instruments. What an idea, a natural varnish. So now when you see a bee, you can think they are good for more than honey.
Marine Blue Butterflies: Marine Blue Butterflies are small little butterflies but oh so full of life. They are everywhere once you realize how many insects are really flying all around us. They lay eggs on plumbago, it also loves alfalfa which is its food source. They feed on alot of other flowers such as lantana, sunflowers, salvia and of course the butterfly bush. Plants that butterflies feed from are called nectar source plants.
Monarch Butterflies Monarch butterflies are beautiful and yet deadly. Colors in nature are fabulous, and so often something that is black and orange is deadly. Yes a tiger is deadly. A monarch is also deadly. Birds, lizards, and other wildlife will rarely if never, ever partake of this beauty to the eye. The word monarch also means royalty. So if you see many monarch in this season take it this way, either you are far more royal than you know. Or be very careful in what you partake of, whether it be food, television, reading material and even the computer. Here is the definition so you can keep it on hand. MONARCH 1: a person who reigns over a kingdom or empire: as a: a sovereign ruler b: a constitutional king or queen2: one that holds preeminent position or power.
O
The praying mantis is quite remarkable. They are a predator of other insects and love to hang out close to flowers so as to grab a nectar seeking bug and dine on. Females carry eggs and after those eggs hatch those babes, scurry away, for these beauties are quite cannibalistic and they do love their territories. It has been documented that when these insects copulate that the female eats the head of its mate. It has also been seen that they have even dined on a hummingbird! I just love how this insect turns as well as swivels its head to look at you. It is almost as if it knows what you are thinking. TOO COOL! This picture was taken in the suburbs of San Diego.
Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies are certainly cute. They have only a few larval plants. That is a plant that they lay eggs on, so that when the caterpillars are born, they have food right there! Also there are dozens of nectar sources, where they get nectar. The western tiger swallowtail lays its eggs on the poplar tree, sycamore or the willow tree. If you plant a sycamore tree, you shall have dozens of these swallowtails breeding all around you. It does use the other 2, but does seem to favor the sycamore tree. It is so delightful to watch this beauty, not fly, but glide through the yard. Many people plant food sources expressly for the beauty of butterflies. There are several species of swallowtails here in California, and this is just One of the beauties.

White Checkered Skipper This is a butterfly who loves southern California. Butterflies are so cool. Wings that take them high above the ground, wings to take them distances away from population sound. Wings that close tightly shut, and wings that open to shine where put! Would be so awesome to become as you, to fly where you do, and see flowers from your perspective, to see from your vantage point. Not to focus on that which could devour, , but to focus on the nectar that you seek. Would be beautiful to see that which surrounds you, and focus on the beautiful sites and not the bad. Your wings kiss the petals and when I see you, I receive such blessing, a blessing that causes me to fly as well, and kiss the sky
